Lake Tanganyika Development Project

The Lake Tanganyika Development Project (LTDP) is a significant initiative aligned with Zambia’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform the nation into a prosperous middle-income country by 2030. Administered by the Northern Province Provincial Administration, the LTDP focuses on the Lake Tanganyika basin and its surrounding regions, specifically the Mpulungu and Nsama districts.

The LTDP is designed as an integrated natural resources management project with three core components:

Integrated Natural Resources Management: This component is dedicated to protecting the ecological health of the Lake Tanganyika basin.

Improvement of Livelihoods and Socio-economic Infrastructure Development: This aims to enhance the quality of life for local populations by improving access to social infrastructure and supporting diverse economic activities.

Project Management and Coordination: Focuses on the efficient oversight and execution of the project’s objectives.

The project’s goals include reducing poverty in the basin and enhancing the quality of life for residents while safeguarding the lake’s ecological integrity. A recent activity under Component 2 involved a visit by the then Acting Permanent Secretary Ms. Beauty Undi-Phiri to Nsama District to assess progress in the Nsumbu Hospital, specifically in the Outpatient Department (OPD) and Maternity departments, which are crucial for improving healthcare services in the area.
