Northern Province Acting Permanent Secretary, Ms. Beauty Undi-Phiri, has directed the local authority in Kasama District to immediately begin the construction of a 1×2 classroom block at Soft Katongo Day Secondary School in response to the shortage of classroom space for learners.
Following the introduction of the Free Education Policy by President Hakainde Hichilema, schools across the country have experienced a significant increase in enrolment as more pupils seek access to education. This has, however, resulted in inadequate classroom infrastructure in many learning institutions.

To address such challenges, the Government increased the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation to K40 million per constituency. President Hakainde Hichilema further directed that more classroom blocks be constructed and that no child should be forced to sit on the floor while learning.
In line with this directive, Ms. Undi-Phiri officially handed over desks to Soft Katongo day Secondary School to ensure that learners have a comfortable and conducive learning environment.
She said that the increase in pupil enrolment is a positive development, as it reflects the growing number of children seeking access to education.

Ms.Undi-Phiri also urged the local authority, in collaboration with the Department of Water Development, to ensure that the school has access to a reliable supply of running water.
Meanwhile, School Head Girl Sharon Senkele thanked the Government for its unwavering commitment to improving access to quality education. She said the desks delivered to the school would go a long way in enhancing the learning environment and motivating pupils to work harder in their studies.
