Government says the School Feeding Program, implemented in partnership with Mary’s Meals in Northern Province, is expected to significantly reduce stunting levels among children, particularly in Senga district.
Northern Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Bernard Mpundu expressed concern that despite the region’s diverse food sources, Mbala and Senga districts continue to record high numbers of childhood stunting.
Speaking at the official launch of the School Feeding Program and the commemoration of World Porridge Day at Kawala Primary School in Senga Hill district, the Permanent Secretary urged parents to ensure their children attend school.
He noted that the government introduced the feeding program specifically to address this nutritional issue and emphasized that partners like Mary’s Meals are crucial in complementing government efforts.
Mr. Mpundu also questioned the actions of some parents who are preventing their children from participating in the provided meals.
“The porridge being provided to these children has all the nutritional benefits that will aid in a child’s growth,” said Mr. Mpundu. “Parents must desist from stopping your children from eating at school, as this is a government program.”
He added that the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema is committed to ensuring all children access education without challenges, whether related to food or tuition.
He cited the introduction of free education and the School Feeding Program as evidence of this commitment.
