The Government of the Republic of Zambia has granted a mineral exploration license to Barrick Lumwana Mining Company to conduct exploration activities in selected areas of Northern Province.
This move is part of ongoing efforts to unlock the country’s mineral potential and contribute towards achieving Zambia’s target of producing 3 million metric tons of copper annually within the next decade.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement meeting in Kasama, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta said the decision to open up Northern Province for mineral exploration is aimed at diversifying mining activities and accelerating regional economic development.
“Northern Province holds immense potential for mineral development. Through systematic and responsible exploration, we aim to understand and harness the mineral wealth lying beneath its surface,” Dr. Kabeta said.
He added that the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for both large-scale and small-scale mining operations.
Dr. Kabeta further emphasized the importance of curbing illegal mining, which continues to deprive the country of significant revenue.
“To date, over 1,000 licenses have been issued to artisanal and small-scale mining cooperatives as part of our formalization efforts. We call on all stakeholders to join hands in ending illegal mining and ensuring that the country fully benefits from its natural resources,” he said.
And Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bernard Mpundu, welcomed the development, describing it as a major milestone that signals renewed government interest in harnessing the province’s mineral potential.
He noted that districts such as Senga Hill have shown signs of gold deposits, highlighting the province’s growing importance in Zambia’s mining landscape.
Speaking on behalf of Barrick Lumwana, Environmental Manager Mr. Paul Mashekeni assured stakeholders that the company is committed to conducting responsible exploration and working closely with traditional leaders and local authorities to ensure surrounding communities benefit from the process.
The exploration license granted to Barrick Lumwana marks a significant step in Zambia’s broader mineral strategy, which aims to position the country as a key global player in the copper and critical minerals market.
