The Parliamentary Committee on Health is currently in Northern Province to assess the challenges citizens face in accessing services from the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA).
During a courtesy call on Northern Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Bernard Mpundu, Committee Chairperson Dr. Christopher Kalila (MP) expressed concern that rural residents are not subscribing to the NHIMA scheme, while urban areas have seen greater utilization of its services.
Dr. Kalila emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure citizens have access to quality healthcare but acknowledged that as the population grows, the burden of disease also increases.
“We must explore ways to raise additional funds for healthcare, and one potential avenue is through donor support. The U.S. government, for example, has contributed $8 billion to our country over time, much of which has gone towards the health sector,” Dr. Kalila stated.
He further acknowledged the benefits of the NHIMA scheme, particularly for citizens who struggle to afford medical treatment.
“While we recognize that the scheme has its challenges, it has been beneficial to many. We have engaged with key stakeholders and provided recommendations to enhance the scheme’s effectiveness,” he said.
Meanwhile, Northern Province Permanent Secretary Mr. Bernard Mpundu voiced concerns over the NHIMA’s slow response times.
He urged that NHIMA services be strengthened in rural areas to ensure citizens can access the necessary care.
“NHIMA is a valuable initiative, but it requires more sensitization to reach our rural populations,” said Mr. Mpundu.
