Kasama -Northern Province. Following a prolonged drought experienced in most parts of the country, Northern Province has positioned itself for a good harvest this year due to favorable weather conditions.
A combination of improved input distribution, effective pest control measures, and favorable weather conditions has enabled farmers to maximize their yields, strengthening national food security.
In this farming season, the province has experienced well-distributed rainfall, ensuring strong crop growth.
Additionally, swift intervention against the fall armyworms has minimized damage, with infestations affecting only 6–8 percent of cultivated fields.
Agricultural authorities and farmers worked closely to contain the pest, preventing widespread destruction.
The Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) has played a key role in boosting productivity.
A total of 98,315 farmers in the province have benefited from the program, with 77,815 supported under the Electronic Voucher System and 20,500 under the Direct Input Supply System.
Notably, all beneficiaries deposited their K400 contributions on time, reflecting their commitment to the program and confidence in its benefits.
With these interventions, Northern Province is on track to surpass last year’s maize production, setting a new benchmark for agricultural success.
Traditional leaders, cooperatives, and farming communities have commended the government for its proactive approach.
“We are extremely grateful for the government’s continued support. This season, we received inputs on time, pest control measures were effective, and weather conditions were favorable. As a result, we are expecting a good harvest this year. This is a major victory for farmers and the nation at large,” said Northern Province Agriculture Coordinating Officer, Mr. Derrick Simukanzye.
With no major reports of crop damage and a bumper harvest on the horizon, Northern Province is set to make a significant contribution to Zambia’s food reserves and agricultural economy.
As the harvest season approaches, the region stands as a testament to the impact of strong government policies, farmer dedication, and coordinated agricultural strategies.
