Kasama, December 5, 2024, the President of the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWUZ), Mr. Joy Beene, paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Northern Province, Ms. Beauty Undi-Phiri. The meeting, held at the Deputy Permanent Secretary’s office in Kasama, centered on key issues affecting civil servants and the union’s efforts to enhance their welfare.
Mr. Beene outlined his mission in the province, which includes facilitating the election of new CSAWUZ provincial leadership with a fresh mandate, providing worker education, and gathering feedback on service conditions to inform his discussions with the Republican President and Ministers. He noted that one of the major concerns raised by civil servants is the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and highlighted the union’s commitment to resolving these challenges.
He also welcomed the government’s introduction of examinations for promotions, emphasizing that the move would ensure merit-based advancements and professionalism within the civil service. Mr. Beene proudly highlighted that CSAWUZ, as the oldest union in the civil service, has been serving Zambian workers for 49 years.
In her remarks, Ms. Beauty Undi-Phiri warmly welcomed CSAWUZ to the province and urged the union to ensure the election of credible and transparent leadership—leaders capable of effectively representing the interests of civil servants. She praised the Republican President for his support of unionism and expressed optimism about the government’s readiness to collaborate with unions to address civil servants’ concerns.
Ms. Undi-Phiri also reminded the union to emphasize to civil servants their duty to deliver quality services to the Zambian people. She supported the idea of exams for promotions, stating that it would help identify those genuinely suited for civil service roles.
Concluding her address, she wished CSAWUZ success in their elections and prayed for a leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the workers.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment between CSAWUZ and the provincial administration to improving conditions for civil servants while promoting professionalism and accountability in public service.
