Government has flagged off the distribution of farming inputs in Mporokoso District under the Emergency Wetlands Farming Programme which is a component of the Food Security Pack (FSP).
Mporokoso District Commissioner Brian Muyuni, who graced the launch, said 3, 400 households are targeted to benefit from the programme.
He said the district has already received all the 10,200 assorted bags of inputs meant for the district.
Mr Muyuni said the district has received 3, 400 by 50 kilograms bags of D-compound fertilizer, 3, 400 by 50 kg bags of Urea fertilizer.
He adds that the district has also received 2, 800 by 5 kg bags of white maize seeds and 600 by 5 kg bags of orange maize seeds.
He has since appealed to beneficiaries of the emergency wetland programme to use the inputs for the intended purpose.
The District Commissioner said government remains committed to cushioning the impact of flash floods and drought on the country’s food security hence coming up with this intervention.
“Government has given us these inputs to ensure that we minimise the risk of food insecurity at household level and we should therefore not misuse the seed and fertilizer.” Mr Muyuni said
Speaking during the same event, Mporokoso District Community Development Officer Edward Mutafya warned beneficiaries against selling the inputs.
Mr Mutafya said his office working with other stakeholders in the district will ensure close monitoring of the beneficiaries.
“These inputs are for you to grow and avoid hunger in your homes, they are not for sell.” said Mr Mutafya
And one of the beneficiaries Boniface Mulenga thanked government for the provision of the wetland inputs.
Another beneficiary, Astridah Kambobe, said government should be commended for addressing the plight of vulnerable people in society.
