Mbala Member of Parliament Njawva Simutowe has called for an education system that imparts knowledge and skills among learners.
Mr Simutowe said the country needs to have people who are knowledgeable and skilled to spearhead development and advancement.
He however, expressed concern that many youths in Mbala are opting to apply for driving courses under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) skills development bursaries instead of going for mechanical courses like engineering.
Mr Simutowe, who is also Luapula Province Minister, said this during the commemoration of African Day of Decentralisation held at the Civic Centre in Mbala.
He said if all the youths became drivers, it would be hard to find engineers to service vehicles.
The commemorations were held under the theme “Building Resilient Education and Skilling Systems Rooted in Africa’s Realities at the Local Level.
Government through local authorities, is supporting skill development by sponsoring youths to undertake skill development.
