Government has implored the various ethnic groups in Northern Province to embrace cultural differences and appreciate the richness of diverse cultures to strengthen and unite communities.
Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu said appreciating the richness of diverse cultures will make communities stronger and more vibrant.
Mr Mpundu explained that through cultural integration, people learn how to be better citizens in society and to live in harmony.
“This event plays a great role in enhancing national cohesion and integration, which is highly emphasised in our institution and country at large.”
“Culture has been known since man came into existence, and we are still practicing it today. Through cultural integration, we learn how to be better people in society and how to live together as brothers and sisters.” He said.
The permanent secretary said this in a speech read on his behalf by provincial Assistant Secretary Jordan Mwenya at the 2nd Provincial Cultural Festival held in Kasama yesterday.
And Provincial Cultural Officer Vester Ziile explained that cultural events are a celebration of heritage, diversity, and creativity.
He noted that such festivals provide a platform for artists to express themselves by displaying their unique cultures as well as learn from one another.
Mr. Ziille added that such events help foster unity, understanding, and respect among different cultures.
“As we celebrate this cultural event, let us remember the power of art and culture to bring people together, inspire change, and create lasting memories. Let us celebrate the diversity that makes us unique and the shared humanity that binds us together.” He said.
Meanwhile, different ethnic groups that attended the cultural festivals, such as the Bembas, Lungus, and Mambwes, narrated how they migrated from their places of origin to the province.
The groups made an appeal to the elderly to help keep cultural traditions alive by passing them from generation to generation.
They complained that tradition has changed and been diluted over time due to technological inventions and contact with other cultures.
The provincial cultural festival had representation from Mungwi, Mpulungu, Mporokoso, Mbala, and Kasama districts.
The event showcased various traditional dances found in Northern Province, live bands, works of art and craft, including contemporary arts and handicrafts, as well as traditional foods and beverages.
The 2024 Provincial Cultural Festival was celebrated under the theme ’60 years strong, one nation, one people through cultural diversity’
