Northern Province commemorates African Freedom Day as PS challenges African youths to be patriotic

Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu has urged young people in Africa to be patriotic and start loving their continent.
Mr Mpundu who graced the 2024 African Freedom Day commemorations in Kasama, said youths should start realising that they belong to Africa and should therefore protect and defend the continent.
He said African Freedom Day is designed to help Africans remember where they are coming from, especially the young generation
The Permanent Secretary said this in an interview with ZANIS in Kasama shortly after gracing the 2024 African Freedom Day commemorations.
“Today we have political independence; we want to rule ourselves; we want to produce enough food for ourselves to educate ourselves to do research by ourselves and then compete with other worlds; that’s where Africa is going,” he said.
He called on Africans to embrace education, which is based on its norms and traditions.
He noted that China has managed to develop because of its model of education, which is based on its traditions.
Mr Mpundu said Africa should also start researching and educating its people according to African norms and their way of life.
Albano Chishimba, a freedom fighter, said Africa Freedom Day reminds people of how they fought for independence.
Mr Chishimba explained that freedom fighters fought hard to liberate the continent to enable it to have the people it enjoys today.
He has, however, urged government to remember freedom fighters while empowering them.
Mr Chishimba explained that many freedom fighters are languishing in poverty and that the government has not done much to support them.
The continent commemorates African Freedom Day on 25th May but Zambia has held its commemorations today.
The event was held under the theme: Educate and skill Africa for the 21st century: building a resilient education system for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa.
