The Ministry of Education in Mpulungu District has received about K1.3 million for the school feeding programme.
Mpulungu District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Amos Simutowe says the money is meant to procure food for learners under the school feeding program. Speaking to ZANIS, Dr. Simutowe explained that his office has been using money to purchase maize, which is distributed to schools across the district.
He said the provision of food for learners in schools has helped to see an improvement in school attendance among learners.
Dr. Simutowe noted that most pupils attend school even when they have not eaten at home because they know they will be fed at the end of the day. He has since thanked government for the gesture and encouraged it to continue implementing the programme so that more pupils can attend classes.
And Mpulungu District Commissioner Gehard Sikazwe has expressed happiness with the programme that is helping to increase the number of children attending school. Mr. Sikazwe explained that Government is aware that education is the only equalizer and is ready to support children to be in school. He explained that government has developed a number of programmes which are aimed at attracting more pupils to schools.
