HE distribution of cotton seed by the Zambia China Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe has commenced ahead of the reopening of the cloth manufacturing plant next year.

Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma launched the seed distribution exercise to 3,000 farmers that would be supported by the joint venture.

The Zambia China Mulungushi Textiles, a joint venture between the Zambian and Chinese governments, has been on care and maintenance following its closure in 2007 which resulted into the loss of more than 1,500 jobs.

But Mr Lufuma said at the launch of the seed distribution exercise in Kabwe that the disbursement of the seed was a clear demonstration of the New Dawn Administration to revive the industry.

“This is a memorable day not only for Kabwe, but the entire Province because it’s a demonstration of our commitment to promote industrialization that will bring job creation,” said Mr Lufuma who was accompanied by Provincial Minister Credo Nanjuwa and Kabwe Central Member of Parliament Chriszoster Phiri.

He also thanked the people of Central Province for electing President Hakainde Hichilema, saying the Head of State was serious with the wellbeing of the people in the area.

The joint venture is distributing 90 metric tonnes of cotton seed free of charge as part of the implementation of its out-grower scheme which is targeting at supporting 3,000 small-scale farmers.

Meanwhile, Mr Nanjuwa said it gratifying for people in Central Province that the institution which attracted political rhetoric by the PG Government had been opened.

“We’re happy in the Province because the institution which was used as carrot during elections is now about to open,” he said.

Mr Nanjuwa said the opening of the textile industry would help to enhance the province’s contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

Company general manager Brig Gen Michael Phiri said the revival of the plant would create more than 2,500 job opportunities.

And Ms Phiri said the people in her constituency were happy with the government’s move to open the textile and were looking forward to benefit from the venture.

In a vote of thanks, farmers’ representative Evans Machayi said was gratifying to note that the UPND Government had demonstrated its seriousness within two months of being in office.
